The reaction-time numbers attached to Valorant pros that get repeated everywhere — sub-150 ms, TenZ at 138 ms — don't hold up. That 138 ms figure traces to a single self-reported click on a livestream, not a measurement, and it is the best of an unknown number of attempts. When esports players are tested on standardised equipment, the numbers that come back are 220–290 ms, and the most careful studies find no significant difference between professionals and trained athletes who don't play games at all (Saygı & Odabaş, 2023; Bickmann et al., 2021, using the validated Vienna Test System). Rogers et al. (2024) measured competitive FPS players directly at 290.8 ms.
Why reaction time alone doesn't explain Valorant
Valorant is a hero shooter before it is a pure reflex game. Every agent carries abilities that create or remove information before a gunfight even starts — flashes that blind, recon darts that reveal a position, walls that block a peek entirely. A lot of what looks like a fast reaction is a duel that was already decided by utility a second earlier, off-screen. There is also a structural asymmetry between the player peeking an angle and the player holding it — what players call peeker's advantage — that has nothing to do with anyone's raw reflexes. Neither of these shows up in a plain reaction-time number, which is one reason a millisecond figure from a lab does not map cleanly onto rank or match outcomes.

For the real reference points: a plain visual reaction test averages 210–230 ms in laboratory conditions (Woods et al., 2015), and standardised testing of esports players lands at 220–290 ms, not distinguishably different from trained non-gaming athletes. No. It comes from one self-reported click during a livestream, cherry-picked from an unknown number of attempts. It is not a controlled measurement, and repeating it as one is the exact kind of claim this page used to make and should not have.
Does Valorant reward reaction time more than other shooters?
Not in any way we can source. Valorant layers ability-based information — flashes, recon, walls — on top of raw gunfights, which changes what a "reaction" moment even looks like compared with a plainer shooter. We don't have a study isolating how much that shifts the value of raw reaction speed, so we won't invent a number for it.
Why does FPS Aim Trainer read slower than a plain reaction-time test?
Because it measures something different. FPS Aim Trainer has you track a moving target and fire, which adds tracking and aiming time on top of pure reaction. A plain reaction test just times how fast you click when something changes colour. Different tasks, different numbers — neither is wrong.
How can I actually get better at Valorant?
We can't back specific transfer claims here — there is no rigorous study showing that practising a browser reaction test improves real match performance. What the evidence does support: play rested, since sleep deprivation measurably slows reactions, and treat tools like this one as a way to see where you stand rather than a training program with guaranteed results.
