About F1 Start Reaction Test

GGReflex F1 Start recreates the start-lights sequence from a Formula 1 grid. Five red lights come on one at a time, a second apart. At a random moment after the fifth light, all five go out together — that's your cue. React the instant they're gone. Move before that and it's a jump start: no time, and the whole five-light sequence restarts from scratch.

How it works

  • Click, tap, or press space to begin. The five lights come on one by one, one second apart.
  • Once the fifth light is lit, they all go out together after a wait of anywhere from 0.3 to 3 seconds, picked at random — the timing changes every attempt, so there's nothing to learn.
  • React the instant the lights go out. Press anything before that, during the light sequence, and it's a jump start: the whole sequence restarts and that attempt scores nothing.
  • It's one attempt per run. There's no averaging — your reaction to that single lights-out moment is the result.

Result: one reaction time, in milliseconds.

What your time is made of, and the myth we need to correct

You'll see it claimed everywhere that Formula 1 has an official 0.2-second reaction rule — that any driver launching within 0.2 seconds of lights-out is disqualified for anticipating the start rather than reacting to it. That specific rule does not exist in the regulations. What the FIA actually polices is movement: sensors on the car detect whether it moves at all between the lights coming on and going out, and any movement in that window is a false start, full stop. There's no fixed millisecond cutoff written into the rule — the trigger is motion, not a timer.

Formula1.com's own editorial content states that drivers react in about 0.2 seconds on average once the lights actually go out — but that's a figure from the sport's own website, not a telemetry study, and we're citing it as exactly that: an official claim, not a measurement. Driver-by-driver reaction tables that circulate online, with specific names and specific milliseconds attached, trace back to pages with no data source behind them. We're not repeating those.

Our own clock works the same way every reaction test on this site does: it starts the moment the lights turn off in code and stops when your browser reports the press, so your monitor's refresh rate and your mouse or keyboard's response time are baked into the number along with your reaction. We don't subtract any of it.

What counts as a good time here

Our own tiers for this game start at Elite under 180 ms, Pro under 220 ms, Sharp under 260 ms, and down to Sleepy past 350 ms. We set those cutoffs ourselves; they aren't drawn from any study of drivers or of anyone else, and you should treat them as a scoreboard label, not a scientific one.

If you want an actual reference point, the closest defensible one is the roughly 0.2-second figure Formula1.com itself publishes for drivers reacting to lights-out — again, an official-site claim rather than a lab measurement. A healthy adult reacting to a simple visual cue under laboratory conditions typically lands around 210–230 ms, which puts a good result on this test in roughly the same neighborhood as a driver's average start, once you remember that neither number has its hardware lag subtracted out.

Jump starts, and why one attempt is unforgiving

  • Press anything while the lights are still coming on and it's a jump start — no score, and the five-light sequence restarts from the first light.
  • The random delay after the fifth light — 0.3 to 3 seconds — is re-rolled every attempt specifically so you can't count it out in your head and guess it.
  • Because it's a single attempt, one good or bad reaction is your whole result — there's no average to smooth out a lucky guess or a distracted moment.

That makes this test a poor way to measure your reaction time precisely, and a decent way to feel what a real start actually asks of a driver: react to a light going out, not to a countdown you can predict.

Can I trust the driver-by-driver reaction time tables I see online?

No. Tables that list specific milliseconds for specific drivers trace back to pages with no data source and no methodology behind them. We haven't found a legitimate one, so we don't repeat those numbers here.
