Overwatch 2's hero roster splits cleanly into two aiming problems. Hitscan heroes — Widowmaker, Cassidy, Ashe, Soldier: 76 — fire instantly, so landing a shot is close to a pure tracking-and-reaction problem: see it, flick to it, click. Projectile heroes, like Hanzo or Pharah, send something that travels, so hitting a shot means predicting where the target will be, not reacting to where it is now. Those are genuinely different skills, and lumping them under "reaction time" flattens the difference.
Tracking cooldowns is a memory problem, not a reflex one
Knowing whether an enemy's shield, mobility or ultimate is up is a working-memory and attention task you build through repetition and game sense — it has nothing to do with how fast your nerves fire. A player who "reacts" well to a dive often isn't reacting at all; they clocked the cooldown timer earlier and were already positioned for it.
What actually helps, and what's unproven
- For the hitscan half of the game, lower input lag is real and arithmetic: a 144 Hz monitor redraws every 6.9 ms against 16.7 ms at 60 Hz, and a mouse polling at 1000 Hz reports within about 1 ms versus up to 8 ms at 125 Hz.
- Practising tracking on an aim trainer will make you better at that trainer, and plausibly helps the flick-and-track part of hitscan play. The evidence that this transfers to better real-match performance is thin, and nobody has shown it holds for the prediction skill projectile heroes need.
And, as with every shooter on this site, standardised testing does not show elite players winning on raw reaction speed. Rogers et al. (2024) tested FPS professionals directly and found an average of 290.8 ms, in line with the broader esports-testing range and not meaningfully faster than trained athletes from other sports.
