The reaction-time figures attached to CS2 pros that circulate widely — sub-180 ms as "excellent," named players in the 130–150 ms range — don't hold up under standardised testing. When esports players are tested on validated equipment, the numbers are 220–290 ms. Saygı and Odabaş (2023) measured esports players at 229.5 ms and sports-science students at 229.5 ms — statistically identical, p = .999. Bickmann et al. (2021), using the Vienna Test System, likewise found no significant difference between esports players and traditional athletes. Rogers et al. (2024) measured competitive FPS players directly at 290.8 ms — inside that range, not below it.
Why CS2 isn't just a reaction test
CS2 strips away a lot of what other shooters use to soften a duel: no abilities that reveal a position or block a peek outright, just gunplay, recoil control and an economy that decides which weapon you're even holding. There is still a structural asymmetry between the player peeking an angle and the player holding it — what's commonly called peeker's advantage — independent of anyone's raw reaction speed. That, plus spray control and the buy-round economy, decides far more rounds than a single reaction ever will, but the gunfight itself is about as unfiltered as competitive shooters get.

What to expect from your own number
FPS Aim Trainer's Elite, Pro and Sharp tiers are labels picked for that game, not thresholds from any study. For the real reference points: a plain visual reaction test averages 210–230 ms under laboratory conditions (Woods et al., 2015), and standardised esports testing lands at 220–290 ms, not meaningfully different from trained non-gaming athletes tested the same way. What is a good reaction time for CS2?
Drop the sub-180 ms figures you'll see quoted as "pro-tier" — they don't trace to any real measurement. Standardised testing of esports players finds 220–290 ms, with the most rigorous studies showing no significant gap between professionals and trained non-gaming athletes (Saygı & Odabaş, 2023; Bickmann et al., 2021).
Does CS2's subtick system change what reaction time means?
It changes how precisely your shot is registered relative to your actual click, not how fast your brain and hand can react. Subtick is a networking and hit-registration change; the human reaction-time evidence above is unaffected by which netcode a game uses.
Do CS2 pros really react faster than everyone else?
The best evidence says no. Saygı and Odabaş (2023) tested esports players and sports-science students on the same protocol and got 229.5 ms for both groups — statistically indistinguishable. Reaction speed does not appear to be what separates elite CS2 players from trained non-gamers.
Why does FPS Aim Trainer read slower than a plain reaction-time test?
Different task. FPS Aim Trainer has you track a moving target and fire on it, which stacks tracking and aiming time on top of plain reaction time. A reaction test just clocks how fast you click when a fixed box changes colour. Compare a game's score to your own past scores on that same game, not across the two.
What actually separates good CS2 players from great ones?
We won't hand you an invented number for this — no study we can cite isolates it the way reaction-time studies isolate reaction time. What the research does support is that reaction speed itself is not the differentiator. Spray control, positioning and decision-making are the standard explanations among players and coaches, but there is no peer-reviewed figure to attach to any of them, so we are not going to manufacture one.
