What this estimates

Type your age, roughly how many customer-service calls you make per month, and how long you usually wait on hold. The calculator projects that forward to age 80 and tells you, in plain days and hours, how much of your remaining life could be spent listening to hold music. It's a rough, for-fun estimate based entirely on the numbers you enter — and those numbers are not stored or sent anywhere.

How it's calculated

The formula is deliberately simple and shown here so there's no mystery:

calls per month × minutes on hold × 12 months × (80 − your age)

That total is then converted into hours and full days. Because it assumes today's habits stay steady until 80, treat it as a ballpark for fun — not a prediction, and definitely not financial or life advice.

Why we kept the maths this simple

We could have dressed this up. Plug in an industry average — banking waits this long, telecoms that long — and the result would look far more authoritative. We deliberately didn't, and it's worth saying why.

We have no way to verify what the average hold time is for your country, your provider, or this year. A number we can't stand behind doesn't become true just because we wrapped it in a formula and rendered it on a card. So every figure in your result is one you typed. The calculator's entire job is to multiply them.

That's also why the formula sits on the page in plain text instead of hiding in the code. If the result looks wrong to you, you can see exactly which assumption to argue with — and you'd probably be right.

As an order of magnitude, not a measurement. "Hours, not days" versus "days, not weeks" is a distinction that survives all three assumptions above. The exact figure does not, and we'd rather tell you that than let a precise-looking number imply a precision it hasn't earned.

The honest use of this tool is comparison. Run it with your real numbers, then run it again with one extra call a month, and watch what a small habit does across decades. That gap is the real output — the absolute total is just what makes it visceral.

Why build a calculator for something this annoying

Because the cost is invisible. Any single hold is a shrug: eight minutes, a bit of jazz, then a human. It never feels like it's worth being angry about, so nobody adds it up. Multiplication is the only thing that makes an accumulating, forgettable cost visible — and once you see it, the shrug is harder to justify.

That's the whole idea. We're a small studio that makes fast, no-sign-up web things, and this one exists to turn a hundred small irritations into a single number you can look at.

What happens to what you type

Your numbers never leave your device. The arithmetic runs in your browser, in JavaScript you can read. There is no server to send them to, no account to create, and they are not written down after you close the tab. Why 80, and not my actual life expectancy?
Because a real life-expectancy figure would depend on where you live and who you are, and we'd have to ask. Eighty is a round, country-neutral stand-in. What matters to the result is the gap between your age and that line.
Is the result accurate?
It's an estimate built entirely from what you typed, projected forward at a flat rate. Treat it as an order of magnitude, not a measurement — and change the inputs to see the best and worst cases.
