About the Visual Memory Test

A handful of tiles on a grid light up together, briefly, then go dark. You tap them back — all of them, in any order — from memory. Get them all right and the grid grows, with more tiles to remember and less time to look at them, relatively speaking. Miss one and the run ends immediately; there are no lives here.

How it works

  • The grid starts at 3×3 and grows as you clear levels, capping out at 5×5. It gets bigger roughly every four levels, not every round.
  • The number of tiles that light up also grows with level — two tiles to start, adding roughly one more every two levels, capped at one below the total number of tiles on the board.
  • The lit tiles all show at once, for 700 milliseconds plus 40 milliseconds per level — so the reveal actually gets slightly longer as you advance, even while the pattern gets harder to hold.
  • Tap all the lit tiles back, in any order you like. Order doesn't matter here — only which tiles were lit.
  • Tap a tile that wasn't lit and the run ends on the spot. No lives, no retry of the level.

Your score is the last level you cleared completely before a wrong tap ended things.

A different kind of memory than typing digits back

This test asks you to remember where things were, not what order they came in or what they were called — a visuospatial memory task, not a verbal one. That's a genuinely different mental faculty from what our Number Memory test measures, where you're holding a string of digits in something closer to inner speech. People who are strong at one aren't automatically strong at the other, and a low score here says nothing about how you'd do on that test.

The closest research comparison is Corsi block-tapping, a decades-old neuropsychology task where a healthy adult typically manages holding around 5 to 6 positions in sequence (Kessels et al., 2000). It isn't a perfect match for what this page does — the classic Corsi test lights one block at a time and has you repeat them in that same order, while this game flashes several tiles at once and lets you tap them back in any order — but both are testing the same underlying thing: how many spatial locations you can hold onto after a single look.

What counts as a good level here

Because our exact format — simultaneous tiles, any-order recall, a growing grid — doesn't match the Corsi task precisely, we can't hand you a scientifically defensible target score the way we could for a task that had been run exactly like this in a lab. What we can say is that healthy adults typically hold somewhere around 5 to 6 spatial positions on the closest validated task, which gives you a rough sense of the terrain even if it isn't a direct benchmark. Our own Elite and Pro labels are tiers we invented for this game, not research thresholds — the real spread of scores from actual players, and the sample size behind it, is on our stats page.

One miss ends it, so one run isn't the full picture

  • Because a single wrong tap ends the run outright, your score marks the exact point attention or memory slipped — not an average of how you performed. A great run interrupted by one bad guess looks identical, in the final number, to a run that was never going to go any further.
  • Try to hold the overall shape the lit tiles make rather than each tile as a separate fact — most players find a shape easier to keep than a list of coordinates, though we don't have a study measuring how much that actually helps on this specific task.

Play it more than once. A single result on a test that ends on the first mistake tells you less than it feels like it does.

What does the visual memory test actually measure?

Visuospatial memory — your ability to remember where things were positioned, from a single simultaneous glance, rather than a sequence or a set of words. It's a different faculty from the digit span our Number Memory test measures, and doing well on one doesn't predict doing well on the other.

What is a good visual memory score?

We don't have an exact research benchmark for this specific format. Why does the reveal time get longer as I advance, if the game is supposed to get harder?

The reveal window does grow slightly with level, but the number of tiles you have to hold grows faster than the extra time buys you. More positions to remember, in a slightly longer but still short glance, is what actually drives the difficulty.

Is this the same thing as the Chimp Test?

No. The Chimp Test gives you 3 lives and repeats a failed round rather than ending your run, and it asks you to recall an order of specific numbers. This test ends on your first wrong tap, has no lives, and doesn't care about order — only which tiles were lit. They're both memory tests, but they're built to answer different questions.

How can I remember more tiles?

Most players do better trying to hold the overall shape the lit tiles form, rather than memorizing each tile's position as a separate fact. We don't have a study measuring exactly how much that helps on this specific game, but it's a standard approach to spatial memory tasks in general.
