About the Sequence Memory Test

Watch a handful of tiles light up in order, one at a time. Then tap them back in the exact same order. Get the whole sequence right and it grows by one tile; miss a single tap, in any position, and the run ends there. No lives, no retries — the level you reach the first time you break is the level you keep.

How it works

  • Each round plays back the sequence so far: one tile lights up for 350 milliseconds, goes dark, and after a 180-millisecond gap the next one lights. That timing is fixed — it never speeds up as the sequence grows, so the challenge is entirely in how much you have to hold in order, not in how fast the playback gets.
  • After playback finishes, tap the tiles back in the same order the game showed you.
  • Get the sequence exactly right and one more tile is added next round. There's no cap on how long the sequence can grow — the only limit is you.
  • Tap one tile out of order, at any point, and the run ends immediately. There are no lives and no replays of the round you failed.

Your score is the last level you cleared in full — the sequence length just before the one that broke you.

What the level number does and doesn't tell you

Because one wrong tap ends the run outright, your score is a ceiling, not an average — the single moment your memory or your attention slipped, whichever came first. That makes it a noisier number than it looks. A player who is genuinely sharper but has one distracted round can score lower than a player having an average day who happens to focus at the right moment. One run tells you less than it feels like it does.

We don't have a research benchmark to offer for this exact format — a fixed-timing, unbounded sequence-recall game played in a browser isn't something we can point to a specific published study for, so we're not going to invent one. What we can tell you honestly is that the playback speed genuinely never changes; if you're finding a level hard, it's the length that's beating you, not a faster clock.

What counts as a good level

We don't have a sourced average to compare your level against, and we'd rather say that plainly than invent one — this specific format doesn't map cleanly onto a published study. Our Elite, Pro and Sharp labels are tiers we set for this game ourselves, not thresholds backed by research. The one honest comparison available is our own leaderboard: the live spread of real scores, and how many players it's drawn from, is on our stats page, and that sample is still small enough that we'd rather you saw it directly than took a summary from us.

Getting further without a faster reaction

  • Nothing about this test rewards fast reflexes — the tiles wait for you, and the playback timing is identical whether you're on level 3 or level 20. It's purely a memory test.
  • Breaking the sequence into small groups as you watch it — three tiles at a time instead of one long chain — is the same chunking strategy that helps with any memory span task, this one included.

Because a single slip ends the whole run, play it more than once before you treat any one level as the ceiling of what you can actually hold.

Does the game get faster as the sequence grows?

No. Each tile lights for 350 milliseconds with a 180-millisecond gap before the next one, and that timing is identical whether the sequence is 3 tiles or 30. Longer sequences are harder purely because there's more to remember, not because you're being shown it faster.

Why does one wrong tap end the whole run?

That's the format: there are no lives and no replay of a failed round. Your score is the last sequence length you reproduced perfectly, so a single mistap — even on the very last tile — ends things at whatever you'd already cleared.

Is there a maximum level?

No. The sequence keeps growing by one tile every round you clear, with no built-in cap. The only limit is where your memory actually breaks.

Why did my score drop from my last attempt?

Because this is a span test with a single point of failure, your result is much noisier than it feels. One lapse of attention costs you the whole run, so a lower score on a second attempt isn't necessarily a worse memory — it's often just a worse moment. Play it a few times before you trust any single number.

Does breaking the sequence into groups actually help?

Most players find it does — remembering three short groups is easier than one long chain of the same length. It's the same chunking idea that shows up in every memory span task, and using it isn't cheating, it's just how memory works better in practice.
