Why Don't We Ask for Signups or Logins?
July 11, 2026
Most tool sites ask for a signup or email before you get results. We don’t. Just open, use, and close. We honestly explain why we do it this way and what we give up in return.
Why Do You Need to Sign Up for This?
You’ve probably had the experience of going to a site to compress an image or merge two PDFs, only for a login prompt to pop up. It’s supposed to be free, but it asks for your email and requires verification to get the results.
This is inconvenient because three issues come together at once. The friction of a signup process inserted into a 5-second task, the privacy issue of not knowing where your email will be used, and the suspicion that such a simple tool needs your information. We’ve always hit this point when building tools. We didn’t want to set up a barrier unrelated to what the user was trying to do.
No Account Needed
So we set a rule: Open, use, and close. No sign-up, no login, and no email. Just come in when you need a tool, get the job done, and leave. This also aligns with our principle of not uploading files to a server. Since we don’t request accounts or upload files, there is almost no information about you for us to store in the first place. If there is nothing to leave behind, there is nothing to leak.
What We Give Up in Return
Not signing up isn’t free. When you sign up, an email list builds up, data on who and how often they come in is generated, and you can send notifications when new tools are released to encourage them to return. Many services require sign-ups for practical reasons like this. We give all that up, accepting that the connection with users becomes that much weaker. Still, we believe this exchange is right. We believe the trust gained by allowing users to use the tool again is more enduring than forcing them to keep an email address.
So how do we stay free?
Servers need to run and development must continue, so maintaining these tools costs money. If we don’t accept sign-ups or charge fees, how can we cover those costs? Advertising supports the free model. Instead of charging fees or collecting emails, we place ads in designated spots on the page. But the ads are unobtrusive, placed only where they don’t interfere with what the user is trying to do. Keeping the flow of using the tool unimpeded by ads — that’s the line we aim to uphold.
Ultimately, what remains is trust
A tool that doesn’t require sign-ups may seem like a loss at first — you’re giving up the means to retain users. But a tool that gets the job done without barriers will naturally come to mind again when the same task arises. We believe that trust ultimately remains.
