Sometimes it’s confusing to know which type of barcode to use for products, inventory, or labels, and how to create one for free. A barcode isn’t just a single standard, so you must choose the one that fits your purpose to ensure the scanner reads it properly. We’ve compiled the differences between barcode types, how to choose based on your needs, free creation options, and tips for printing and scanning.

Determine the Barcode Type First

What to Use

How to Print and Scan Properly

Most of the time, if your generated barcode cannot be scanned, it is due to an issue during the printing process. Just follow three rules.

First, ensure there is enough margin. The barcode needs empty space (Quiet Zone) on both sides so the scanner can recognize the start and end of the barcode. If you cut it too close to other designs, it won’t be readable. Second, print it at a sufficient resolution. If you print something that looks small on the screen, the barcode may become blurry and spread out, reducing the recognition rate. Export it at a resolution that matches the size you will print. Third, maintain good contrast. Black bars on a white background are standard. Color backgrounds or light-colored bars are common causes of scanning failure.

What to Check When Scanning Fails

First, check if there is enough margin, if the print is blurry or smeared, and if the contrast between the background and the bars is sufficient. Next, confirm that the barcode type is compatible with the scanner. For example, a 2D-only scanner will not be able to read a 1D barcode. Also, check if the number of digits in the value matches the specifications. For example, EAN-13 requires 13 digits, and UPC-A requires 12 digits. If the number of digits doesn’t match, the barcode may not be generated at all or may not be scannable.
