How to Create a Strong Password You'll Actually Remember

Most people handle passwords one of two bad ways: reuse a familiar one everywhere, or bolt on a “!1” to satisfy a site’s rules and call it secure. Neither actually protects you. Here’s what does, and why.

What actually makes a password strong

The biggest factor in password strength is length, not complexity. A longer password is dramatically harder to guess or crack through brute force than a shorter one stuffed with symbols. A password like correct-horse-battery-staple — four unrelated words strung together — is longer and harder to crack than something like P@ss1!, even though the second one looks more “complicated” at a glance. Sites that force you into short passwords with mandatory symbols and numbers aren’t necessarily giving you the strongest option; they’re often just giving you a password that’s hard to type and not much harder to crack.

The second biggest factor is uniqueness. A password that’s strong but reused across five sites is only as safe as the weakest of those five. If any one of those services gets breached — and breaches happen to services of every size, not just the obviously careless ones — attackers try that same email-and-password combination against other sites. This is called credential stuffing, and it’s one of the most common ways accounts actually get broken into, not through someone cracking your password directly, but through reuse.

The third factor is avoiding anything tied to information about you. Birthdays, pet names, addresses, your kids’ names — this kind of information is often publicly findable or guessable, and it’s the first thing targeted guessing attempts try.

Passphrases: the practical middle ground

A passphrase is a password made of several random, unrelated words rather than a single word with substitutions. The appeal is that a phrase like lantern-copper-window-quiet is both long — which makes it strong — and made of real words, which makes it much easier for a human being to actually remember than a string like xK9#mP2$vL.

The important word there is unrelated. A phrase drawn from a quote you like, a song lyric, or a common saying is easier to guess than one made of words with no logical connection to each other. The strength of a passphrase comes from the randomness of which words end up next to each other, not from the words themselves.

For accounts where you don’t need to type the password by hand — most of them, if you’re using a password manager to fill it in — a fully random generated password is the strongest option available. There’s no pattern to guess and no personal information to exploit, because there’s no meaning in it at all.
